Six Years of Joy | Sheilah & Joseph’s Anniversary Photo Session at Oakwood Park in Cottage Grove, MN

Some sessions just radiate warmth—despite the weather—and this one was the perfect example. On a misty, cool June morning at Oakwood Park in Cottage Grove, I had the joy of reconnecting with Sheilah and finally meeting her husband, Joseph, and their adorable son, Kyle.

I first met Sheilah during a solo portrait session, when she shared that the photos would be heading across the world to her husband in Kenya. At the time, they had spent most of their marriage apart--five of their six years long-distance. But today’s session marked something new and beautiful: finally being together in the same place, celebrating six years of marriage side by side.

Joseph arrived in Minnesota this past December and has been soaking up everything from snowstorms to the slower, everyday moments of family life. The way he looked at Sheilah and Kyle—with pure joy and gratitude—was a reminder of how deeply love can grow even across oceans.

And speaking of joy—this family overflowed with it. From giggles to spontaneous play, their connection was infectious. Little Kyle started out a bit sleepy (as you’d expect on an early, misty morning!), but his yawns quickly turned into what we affectionately called his “lion roars.” And once he woke up? He was all in—running, grinning, and clearly loving every second of being with both his mom and dad.

The morning may have been gray, but the love, laughter, and gladness this family carried brought all the color we needed.
