1. Know the season.

If you really want fall photos, then you have to know the season. Just because it’s fall doesn’t mean it will look like it. Do some googling to figure out when the fall colors peak and reach out to your photographer to schedule in that time period. I’d highly recommend you reach out a month or two early so that your photographer is not fully booked as this is the time everyone wants photos taken.

2. When in doubt, Pinterest it out.

Having a hard time knowing what to style your group in for fall photos? Totally get it! First of all, pick an outfit that you’d actually wear. There is no sense in wearing jeans and a plaid shirt if you’re always in a dress or a dress if you’re always in jeans and a plaid shirt.

Still not sure? Okay, set a timer and head to Pinterest. I don’t know about you, but I can spend wayyy too much time on that site. Pinterest is super useful in this area though. Head on over and type in “what to wear for fall photos” and you’ll get tons of great ideas! Or, you can totally head to my board all set up for you here.

3. Don’t overdue it.

Yes, I know I just said to Pinterest it out when in doubt, but here me out here, there’s supposed to be a timer. If you spend too much time getting so many ideas and looking at all the poses of other fall photos, you’ll wind up being too overwhelmed by the time you get to your own shoot and turn into a stick figure instead of a natural human being.

When I start your fall portrait session, I always ask what are the shots you are looking for – this way I can make sure we get all the different individual and group shots desired. If you’ve found a few specific photos you like on Pinterest, definitely feel free to bring a few ideas to the shoot, we’ll work to creatively recreate them.

4. Be prepared to feel a bit awkward.

Want to know a secret? Even movie stars feel weird in front of the paparazzi. So, feeling a little uncomfortable in front of the camera is super normal. In fact, we always say that the first 15 minutes is the weirdest. You’re getting used to looking at the camera. Soon enough we’ll be having a conversation and you’ll be feeling more at ease. The only exception to this is kids – they usually do the best in the first fifteen minutes, so if your fall photo session involves kids, we like to start with them as their focus doesn’t last too much longer ;)

Another way to help fight feeling awkward is expressing any of your expectations to us before the photo session date or at the beginning! Then try your hardest to stop focusing on it and have fun. In fact, we love candid moments as much if not more than the staged photos.
