A Fishing Adventure Engagement Portrait Session at Afton State Park // Cayla & Nick

When Cayla first reached out and shared that she and Nick wanted to have an adventure for their engagement photos, I was immediately excited. When she shared that they were wanting to explore Afton State Park and possibly even go fishing (one of their favorite past times), I was beyond excited. We always encourage the couples we work with to do something that’s true to them! We are all for dressing up all nice but we also LOVE it when couples show their real side too! This is exactly what these two did – splitting their session time in half as we explored Afton in dressy clothes and then hit the beach to relax and fish! (If we could’ve only caught a fish it would’ve been that much cooler!)

My favorite part of this session was watching Nick lead Cayla out to the dock. The dock’s walkway was under water for about ten feet, but they were determined to get out there. He reached back to grab her hand, and she didn’t even think twice about potentially taking a swim. She clutched onto his fingers and let him guide her to the dock where they sat down, rolled up their pant legs, and dipped their toes into the Mississippi River.


These two's love of the outdoors is traced back to how they met in high school. They both had a mutual friend and were at a bonfire but didn’t talk much to each other, so their mutual friend took it upon herself to kindle the flame between them (pun possibly intended!). Her friend put Cayla’s number into his phone and texted Cayla, so that she would have to respond asking “who is this?” And the rest? History. He definitely caught on, but decided to play along and see where things would go. Love it! These two get married on Mark & my anniversary next year – July 16th! – in Colorado where they’re having a fun elopement/kayaking adventure with all the outdoor things.


Cayla and Nick, thanks for all the laughs, for working through the awkward “first-date” being behind the camera, and being willing to dip your toes into the cool river. So loved getting to meet you two and work with you! Blessings on your upcoming wedding day!
