Zwart Family // Sunset Family Portraits at Lock & Dam in Hastings, MN

It is always fun to see old friends. We first met the Zwart family when we moved to Cottage Grove, Minnesota, in the summer of 2013. They invited us over for dinner and we laughed hard as we made fruit dessert cookies – pretending to have goofy accents as we put on our own cooking show. Fast forward to 2021 and the Zwarts have moved across the country to Washington while we remain here, but they came back to celebrate their oldest son’s graduation from Bethel University and capture this moment by asking for some updated family photos.

We met along the Mississippi River at Hastings’ Lock & Dam #2 and made a short walk to the river on the trail that the Zwarts used to walk, run, and rollerblade their way around quite often when they lived in Hastings. Laura shared that Minnesota’s trails are something that she’s really missing in Washington – they just aren’t the same, but they’re starting to get a good lay of the land on the west coast.


It is crazy how life brings us back to these areas that were once so normal, everyday and now feel so nostalgic. The Zwarts are headed back to Washington. This time, their oldest son is coming to look for a job, they’ll be without their younger son who is headed to start a new job, one daughter is staying behind to work in Hastings for the summer, and their youngest daughter is heading back to their new home with mountains and the ocean within a few hours drive.


Zwart family, so fun to see you all again! We are so excited for this new adventure for you all and will continue to pray you grow in closeness to each other and your new community! We’ve so enjoyed knowing you these past 8 years!
